Advancing Equity and Excellence in Undergraduate Education: A Focus on Research Universities

This series documents progress toward meeting what the Boyer 2030 Commission called “the equity/excellence imperative.” From John Dewey and Ernest L. Boyer to the Shirley Strum Kenny-led 1998 Boyer Commission, U.S. higher education has long recognized its obligations to democratic society, in which, as Boyer stated, “equity and excellence cannot be divided.” Today, U.S. research universities are engaged in urgent efforts to more fully realize this ideal in practice, pursing multifaceted reforms designed to meet deeply rooted as well as emerging challenges. When successful, these reforms directly benefit millions of undergraduate students destined for leadership and indirectly influence educational institutions and students regardless of type, mission, and location. As the research university undergraduate experience lies at the core of U.S. higher education, this series documents change vital to both U.S. higher education and democratic society writ large. Topics include curriculum reform, pedagogy, HSI and HBCU excellence, advising, faculty roles and responsibilities, strategic enrollment management, and high-impact practices.
