China's Education Modernization 2035

About the Book Series

In 2019, the Chinese State Council published a significant plan to drive continued reform in and advancement of China's education sector, drawing on the range of preceding reforms since China's opening up in 1978. The document, China's Education Modernization 2035 Plan (The Plan 2035) is aimed at substantially modernizing China's education system by 2035, the year that the country is determined to realize socialist modernization and become an education powerhouse. Implementation of the plan is significant and occurring across all levels of government.

This series explores educational transformation and reform in China from now towards 2035 and focuses on some of the major issues that exist across different sectors as: early childhood education, basic education, higher education, vocational education, and adult education in both urban and rural areas and across different academic disciplines and education-related disciplines. This series reflects on Chinese educational strategies at a time of vigorous development of the socialist-market economy and the need to promote the modernization of education. It also considers how educational reforms and global changes go hand in hand and to explore the complexity and dynamics in the course of their interaction. This series, from a diversified perspective, (i) examines the aims, the policies, the issues, challenges and strategies of reforms at various educational levels and in different academic disciplines, as well as (ii) highlights China’s ambitions of fostering talents to match its requirements in global competition and creating a world-class modernized education system.

The series, China's education modernisation 2035, aims at: (i) drawing the attention of scholars, academics, policy makers, researchers, graduate students, educational practitioners and those who interest in China’s education in the scope, scale and significance of the Plan 2035; (ii) encouraging reflection on the reform movements in different education sectors and at various levels and explore issues concerned; and (iii) examining challenges ahead and ways of coping with these challenges when the Plan 2035 is implemented.
