IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series

About the Book Series

IHE Delft PhD programme leads to a deepening of a field of specialisation. PhD fellows do scientific research, often with conclusions that directly influence their region. At IHE Delft, PhD researchers from around the world participate in problem-focused and solution-oriented research on development issues, resulting in an inspiring research environment. PhD fellows work together with other researchers from many countries dealing with topics related to water and the environment.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

IHE Delft PhD degrees are awarded jointly with a university. The degrees are highly valued and fully recognised in all parts of the world.

Novel Bioremediation Processes for Treatment of Seleniferous Soils and Sediment

Novel Bioremediation Processes for Treatment of Seleniferous Soils and Sediment

1st Edition

By Shrutika Wadgaonkar
October 17, 2018

The aim of this Ph.D. was to develop a technology for the remediation of seleniferous soils/sediments and to explore microbial reduction of selenium oxyanions under different respiration conditions and bioreactor configurations. Seleniferous soil collected from the wheat-grown agricultural land in ...

Optimization of the Electron Donor Supply to Sulphate Reducing Bioreactors Treating Inorganic Wastewater

Optimization of the Electron Donor Supply to Sulphate Reducing Bioreactors Treating Inorganic Wastewater

1st Edition

By Luis Reyes-Alvarado
September 10, 2018

The main objective of this research was to optimize the electron donor supply in sulphate reducing bioreactors treating sulphate rich wastewater. Two types of electron donor were tested: lactate and slow release electron donors such as carbohydrate based polymers and lignocellulosic biowastes. ...

Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane Coupled to the Reduction of Different Sulfur Compounds as Electron Acceptors in Bioreactors

Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane Coupled to the Reduction of Different Sulfur Compounds as Electron Acceptors in Bioreactors

1st Edition

By Chiara Cassarini
August 01, 2018

This research investigated new approaches to control anaerobic methane oxidation coupled to sulfate reduction (AOM-SR) and enrich anaerobic methanotrophs (ANME) and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) with the purpose of designing a suitable bioreactor for AOM-SR at ambient pressure and temperature. ...

Anaerobic Treatment of Mine Wastewater for the Removal of Selenate and its Co-Contaminants

Anaerobic Treatment of Mine Wastewater for the Removal of Selenate and its Co-Contaminants

1st Edition

By Lea Tan
August 01, 2018

Selenium (Se) pollution has led to several cases of severe aquatic ecosystem deterioration due to Se poisoning caused by bioaccumulation over time. However, the removal of selenate (SeO42-) from wastewater streams with co-contaminants has been largely considered as a black box in anaerobic ...

Performance Assessment and Enrichment of Anaerobic Methane Oxidizing Microbial Communities from Marine Sediments in Bioreactors

Performance Assessment and Enrichment of Anaerobic Methane Oxidizing Microbial Communities from Marine Sediments in Bioreactors

1st Edition

By Susma Bhattarai Gautam
August 01, 2018

Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) coupled to sulfate reduction (AOM-SR) is a biological process mediated by anaerobic methanotrophs (ANME) and sulfate reducing bacteria. It has scientifi c and societal relevance in regulating the global carbon cycle and biotechnological application for treating ...

Sediments in the Tema Harbour (Ghana) Chemical Pollution and Sedimentation Rates

Sediments in the Tema Harbour (Ghana): Chemical Pollution and Sedimentation Rates

1st Edition

By Benjamin Botwe
August 01, 2018

Sediment pollution and accumulation in harbours are major environmental issues and studies that advance their solutions are essential for harbour sustainability. This book provides the first comprehensive assessment of chemical pollution in sediments and sediment accumulation rates in the tropical ...

Treatment of Petroleum Refinery Wastewater with Constructed Wetlands

Treatment of Petroleum Refinery Wastewater with Constructed Wetlands

1st Edition

By Hassana Mustapha
August 01, 2018

Pollution of waterbodies and the environment by petroleum industry is of particular concern in Nigeria. This problem can be addressed by the application of constructed wetlands (CWs) which is a nature-based system that is simple to construct, have low operational and maintenance costs in terms of ...

Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layer

Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layer

1st Edition

By Liqin Zuo
July 10, 2018

The evolution and utilization of estuarine and coastal regions are greatly restricted by sediment problems. This thesis aims to better understand fine sediment transport under combined action of waves and currents, especially in the wave-current bottom boundary layer (BBL). Field observations, ...

Strengthening the Human Right to Sanitation as an Instrument for Inclusive Development

Strengthening the Human Right to Sanitation as an Instrument for Inclusive Development

1st Edition

By Pedi Obani
June 18, 2018

Over a third of the current 7.3 billion people worldwide are burdened with poor sanitation services. The resulting social, relational and ecological exclusion make the realisation of the human right to sanitation (HRS) a critical concern development concern. However, the literature has evolved in a...

Deterioration and Optimal Rehabilitation Modelling for Urban Water Distribution Systems

Deterioration and Optimal Rehabilitation Modelling for Urban Water Distribution Systems

1st Edition

By Yi Zhou
June 08, 2018

Pipe failures in water distribution systems can have a serious impact and hence it’s important to maintain the condition and integrity of the distribution system. This book presents a whole-life cost optimisation model for the rehabilitation of water distribution systems. It combines a pipe ...

Microbial Synthesis of Chalcogenide Nanoparticles Combining Bioremediation and Biorecovery of Chalcogen in the Form of Chalcogenide Nanoparticles

Microbial Synthesis of Chalcogenide Nanoparticles: Combining Bioremediation and Biorecovery of Chalcogen in the Form of Chalcogenide Nanoparticles

1st Edition

By Joyabrata Mal
May 16, 2018

Recent years have seen a growing interest in the application of chalcogenide nanoparticles (NPs), e.g. Se, Te, CdSe and CdTe NPs, in various industrial sectors including energy, petroleum refining and in the field of biology and medicine. Moreover, due to the high toxicity of chalcogen oxyanions, ...
