IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series

About the Book Series

IHE Delft PhD programme leads to a deepening of a field of specialisation. PhD fellows do scientific research, often with conclusions that directly influence their region. At IHE Delft, PhD researchers from around the world participate in problem-focused and solution-oriented research on development issues, resulting in an inspiring research environment. PhD fellows work together with other researchers from many countries dealing with topics related to water and the environment.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

IHE Delft PhD degrees are awarded jointly with a university. The degrees are highly valued and fully recognised in all parts of the world.

Role of Reservoir Operation in Sustainable Water Supply to Subak Irrigation Schemes in Yeh Ho River Basin Development of Subak Irrigation Schemes: Learning from Experiences of Ancient Subak Schemes for Participatory Irrigation System Management in Bali

Role of Reservoir Operation in Sustainable Water Supply to Subak Irrigation Schemes in Yeh Ho River Basin: Development of Subak Irrigation Schemes: Learning from Experiences of Ancient Subak Schemes for Participatory Irrigation System Management in Bali

1st Edition

By Mawiti Infantri Yekti
July 07, 2017

Quantitative research with respect to the combination of engineering and socialcultural- religious aspects based on the Tri Hita Karana philosophy in Subak irrigation schemes is original in the field of land and water development. A scenario analysis needs a good and careful system approach. Based ...

Modernisation Strategy for National Irrigation Systems in the Philippines Balanac and Sta. Maria River Irrigation Systems

Modernisation Strategy for National Irrigation Systems in the Philippines: Balanac and Sta. Maria River Irrigation Systems

1st Edition

By Mona Liza Delos Reyes
May 24, 2017

The book presents documentary evidence of the insufficiency of rehabilitation works to close the gap between the irrigation service and actual area irrigated of publicly funded national irrigation systems in the Philippines. It outlines a methodology for formulating a modernisation plan for ...

Effect of Sulphide on Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal

Effect of Sulphide on Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal

1st Edition

By Francisco Rubio Rincon
March 09, 2017

The enhanced biological removal of phosphorus (EBPR) is a popular process due to high removal efficiency, low operational costs, and the possibility of phosphorus recovery. Nevertheless, the stability of the EBPR depends on different factors such as: temperature, pH, and the presence of toxic ...

Ecohydrology of the Andes Páramo Region

Ecohydrology of the Andes Páramo Region

1st Edition

By Veronica G. Minaya Maldonado
February 06, 2017

In the Andes mountainous region of South America grasslands known as páramos provide important ecosystem services like sustaining biodiversity, securing carbon sequestration and providing water storage. However, many páramos regions are subject to land use change due to expanding agriculture, ...

Improving Flood Prediction Assimilating Uncertain Crowdsourced Data into Hydrologic and Hydraulic Models

Improving Flood Prediction Assimilating Uncertain Crowdsourced Data into Hydrologic and Hydraulic Models

1st Edition

By Maurizio Mazzoleni
January 25, 2017

In recent years, the continued technological advances have led to the spread of low-cost sensors and devices supporting crowdsourcing as a way to obtain observations of hydrological variables in a more distributed way than the classic static physical sensors. The main advantage of using these type ...

Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal from Low Concentrated Effluents Study of System Configurations and Operational Features for Post-treatment of Anaerobic Effluents

Autotrophic Nitrogen Removal from Low Concentrated Effluents: Study of System Configurations and Operational Features for Post-treatment of Anaerobic Effluents

1st Edition

By Javier Adrián Sánchez Guillén
January 06, 2017

On a global scale, sewage represents the main point-source of water pollution and is also the predominant source of nitrogen contamination in urban regions. The present research is focused on the study of the main challenges that need to be addressed in order to achieve a successful inorganic ...

Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

Modelling Approaches to Understand Salinity Variations in a Highly Dynamic Tidal River: The Case of the Shatt al-Arab River

1st Edition

By Ali Dinar Abdullah
January 06, 2017

This book reports the first systematic monitoring and modelling study on water availability, water quality and seawater intrusion of the Shatt al-Arab River (SAR) on the border of Iraq and Iran, where causes and concentration levels of salinity have not yet been fully understood, let alone ...

Flood Hazard Mapping: Uncertainty and its Value in the Decision-making Process

Flood Hazard Mapping: Uncertainty and its Value in the Decision-making Process

1st Edition

By Micah Mukungu Mukolwe
December 27, 2016

Computers are increasingly used in the simulation of natural phenomena such as floods. However, these simulations are based on numerical approximations of equations formalizing our conceptual understanding of flood flows. Thus, model results are intrinsically subject to uncertainty and the use of ...

Manganese Removal from Groundwater Role of Biological and Physico-Chemical Autocatalytic Processes

Manganese Removal from Groundwater: Role of Biological and Physico-Chemical Autocatalytic Processes

1st Edition

By J.H. Bruins
December 15, 2016

In The Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries, manganese is removed by conventional groundwater treatment with aeration and rapid (sand) filtration. Such a treatment process is easy to operate, cost effective and sustainable, because it does not make use of strong oxidants such as O3, ...

Managing Basin Interdependencies in a Heterogeneous, Highly Utilized and Data Scarce River Basin in Semi-Arid Africa The Case of the Pangani River Basin, Eastern Africa

Managing Basin Interdependencies in a Heterogeneous, Highly Utilized and Data Scarce River Basin in Semi-Arid Africa: The Case of the Pangani River Basin, Eastern Africa

1st Edition

By Jeremiah Kipkulei Kiptala
December 02, 2016

For integrated water resources management both blue and green water resources in a river basin and their spatial and temporal distribution have to be considered. This is because green and blue water uses are interdependent. In sub-Saharan Africa, the upper landscapes are often dominated by rainfed ...

Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate

Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate

1st Edition

By Suthee Janyasuthiwong
August 18, 2016

Metal contamination in the environment is a persisting global issue. The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies ...

Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters: Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

1st Edition

By Joana Cassidy
August 18, 2016

This work investigated two different approaches to optimize biological sulphate reduction in order to develop a process control strategy to optimize the input of an electron donor and to study how to increase the feasibility of using a cheap carbon source.Feast/famine regimes, applied to design the...
