Southern Studies in Education

About the Book Series

Southern Studies in Education (SSE) is a multidisciplinary and multifocal book series through which diverse communities in the Global South and beyond can navigate each other’s rich histories, experiences, theories, knowledges within and through education. The series focuses on the epistemic potential of Southern perspectives in rethinking our taken-for-granted assumptions about what education is and what purposes it may serve.  ‘Southern’ is envisioned as more than a geographical location (although it is as well) but rather a status of subordination, silence and dispossession that a substantial number of people and communities may be characterized by in education and beyond. That is, ‘Southern’ may not be understood to exclusively cover the regions of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America, and but also other perspectives, epistemologies, ontologies, axiologies and praxes that tend to be overshadowed and subalternized worldwide or in a given context. What is ‘Southern’ can be found within the ‘Northern’ as well, e.g., indigenous knowledges.

The series welcomes single-authored/multiple-authored monographs and edited volumes that explicitly spell out the knowledge of certain Southern perspectives in education or their analyses of issues in Southern spaces. Books can be positioned in areas such as:

  • alternative epistemologies and praxes in doing education;
  • coloniality in (internationalization of) higher education;
  • decolonial pedagogies;
  • epistemic hierarchies in and through education;
  • philosophy of education;
  • Southern methods in researching education;
  • Southern sociologies of education.

All in all, SSE aims to actively provide a strong and solidary publishing venue for inter-epistemic dialogues across, between and within all scholarly and educational spaces and communities.
