The Routledge Library of Sufi Orders

The Sufi Orders in Islam are significant for their contribution to Islamic civilisation and for the development of forms of piety and faith wherever Muslims have formed communities – from Indonesia to Morocco, and more recently in North America and Western Europe. This series seeks to provide an individual volume for each of the Sufi Orders written to a broadly similar template. It will cover the diversity of Sufi Orders and their contributions to Islamic culture, from their origins in the 12^th-13^th centuries C.E. to more recent and living manifestations. Books will focus on the social contexts of the Orders, and demonstrate and analyse the importance of distinctive Sufi rituals, devotions and traditions, which have contributed to a sense of piety and identity. Typical examples of customs specific to particular Sufi Orders include sartorial habits, pilgrimages, dietary regulations, rules pertaining to occupations, and regulations for Sufi worship as it pertains to music and "dancing".

Books in the series are focused primarily on research of a historical nature rather than theological discourse. Some Sufi Orders have existed over many centuries, others have been relatively ephemeral. Books focusing on both the long historical perspective, offering a general view, will be welcome, as will those on a specific and shorter time-frame.
